Society History and Operations

History, heritage and preservation - these are the goals and watchwords of the Bedford County Historical Society. The Society traces its roots to a group of Bedford Countians who first met on April 11, 1954, to form an organization to organize and preserve county records and to compile county history. They formed a society, elected officers, and met regularly for more than years. Meetings became irregular after that, but much historical activity continued in the county as various projects were completed in connection with the Civil War Centennial.

In July of 1965, the Society was formally reorganized, bylaws were developed, and regular quarterly meetings were established to promote and preserve Bedford County history. The Society has met continuously since that time. Meetings dates are the third Monday night in March, June, and September, and the first Monday night in December. Meetings are usually held in the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, beginning with a covered dish supper at 6:30 P.M. followed by a business meeting and program at 7:30 P.M.
