President's message ....
It’s once again bicentennial time in Bedford
County! The town of Shelbyville will celebrate its 200th anniversary in July,
and the Bedford County Historical Society will participate in a full slate of
exciting events surrounding this historical milestone. We will use this event to
promote the Society and our county heritage throughout Bedford and surrounding
counties. We encourage you to join in the activities.
The spring issue of our historical quarterly featured several articles on local
events and people, among them the Webb school Leadership Legacy and Who’s Who in
Bedford County in 1911. The summer issue is dedicated to the city of Shelbyville
and its 200th anniversary. It is a collection of information from many diverse
sources and different eras of the past 200 plus years, some previously published
and some new. These and all of our other Society publications are available at
the Argie Cooper Public Library.
Our program for the Society’s March meeting featured pioneer trails and lands
grants of Middle Tennessee, focusing on those for Bedford and surrounding
counties. It was one of our more interesting programs and generated many
favorable member compliments. Our summer meeting will feature “Grandpa’s Roads,”
a presentation on the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway. This meeting
promises to be an enlightening evening as well and we hope you can join us.
If you haven’t paid your 2010 membership dues, please do so very soon so that
you will not miss out on the 2010 quarterlies and programs. We still have a
membership special – buy a bicentennial postcard book at regular price and get
your 2010 membership free. What a great way to renew or recruit a new member,
and help the Society as well !
In closing, please support your Society and make it the best it can be. We look
forward to seeing you at our June 14 meeting. As always, thanks for your
support.
Al Simmons,
President
